The academic year at StFX is winding down.
The last day of classes was Friday; exams wrap up April 21.
The warden of Antigonish Co. says university students and officials had a good year in the face of a global pandemic.
After April’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron said a recent COVID-19 case in an off-campus student was handled well.
“They came quickly out with the information and the isolation piece was done textbook,” he said. “I think the community has come to expect that type of response from the university.”
The case, which was counted in the eastern zone’s Antigonish-Guysborough community health network, is now considered resolved.
McCarron said he doesn’t believe students leaving for the summer will make residents rest easier.
He said that will happen with vaccines.
“The more needles in the arms will really be the thing that sets the community at ease,” he said. “I think people have grown accustomed to the university students, (and) the students did a good job, so it just became part of our community- an extension of our community, really.”
McCarron said StFX students and officials have conducted themselves exceptionally well.
He said everyone is pleased with that in the final stages of the academic year.
