Another person has died from COVID-19.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang says the Central Zone man in his 80s was the 72nd person to die from the virus.
Dr. Strang reported 117 new cases Friday, with 1537 active infections and 89 people in hospital, including 21 in ICU.
He says 97 new cases are in Central Zone, nine in Eastern Zone, seven in Western Zone and four in Northern Zone.
Dr. Strang responded to new federal advice saying provinces could begin reducing restrictions and looking at a return to normal when 75 per cent of their populations are fully immunized.
“The number is not 75 per cent of eligible, but that’s 75 per cent of the entire population, and I think that’s an important distinction,” he says. “That includes the less than 11 years of age… and then small numbers of older people who can’t get vaccinated. What we need to have is an 85 per cent uptake of vaccine in those who are eligible.”
Dr. Strang continued to urge everyone to get vaccinated when it’s their turn.
