Department of Natural Resources and renewables Minister Tory Rushton shared some devastating news about the Shelburne wildfire today.
He confirmed that approximately 60 homes were damaged or destroyed by the fire and 150 structures were lost overall.
“This is a traumatic number, we knew it, we knew that there was going to be loss and I can’t send enough simply to the families affected,” said Rushton.
The announcement means that over 200 homes were damaged or destroyed by the wildfires across the province leaving families with nowhere to go. 151 homes were damaged or destroyed by the Tantallon wildfire.
Last week, DNRR spokesperson for the Shelburne fire complex, Dave Rockwood shared the story of how one of the homes was lost. He said that a waterbomber was unable to deliver water to an area of need because someone had entered the evacuation zone without authorization making it too dangerous for the plane to deliver its load.
One of the main focuses of all firefighting efforts in the province has been the preservation of structures.
Rushton says he and every other official involved in the fires is there to support the people whose homes were lost.
