A couple of emergency departments in Nova Scotia Health’s Eastern Zone will experience temporary closures for at least the next week.
The area covers Cape Breton Island, Antigonish and Guysborough counties.
According to the health authority’s July 12th release, hospitals affected include Eastern Memorial in Canso and Strait Richmond in Evanston.

The following emergency departments (ED) in Nova Scotia Health’s Eastern Zone (Cape Breton Island, Antigonish and Guysborough counties) will experience temporary closures between July 12-19, 2024:
Eastern Memorial Hospital (Canso)
Closed until Monday, July 22 at 12 p.m.
Care options available:
Eastern Memorial Hospital virtual urgent care hours: Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hours subject to change.
RN prescriber will be at the primary care clinic – Friday, July 12.
Guysborough Memorial Hospital virtual urgent care hours: Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hours subject to change.
Strait Richmond Hospital (Evanston)
Closed until Monday, July 15 at 8 a.m.
Closed: Tuesday, July 16 at 7 p.m.; Reopens: Wednesday, July 17 at 8 a.m.
Closed: Friday, July 19 at 7 a.m.; Reopens: Monday, July 22 at 8 a.m.
The emergency department at Glace Bay Hospital is open Monday, July 15 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, July 17 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The department will be closed on Tuesday, July 16.
Urgent treatment centres in North Sydney and Baddeck are open, by appointment only, for patients with unexpected but non-life-threatening health concerns.
•Northside urgent treatment centre (Northside General Hospital): Open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To book an appointment, call 902-794-8966.
•Victoria County temporary urgent treatment centre (Victoria County Memorial Hospital): Open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. No walk-ins. To book an appointment, call 902-295-2983.
