Sales are going up for a Halifax chocolatier despite a recent rise in their prices.
Because of the Canada Post strike, Rousseau Chocolatier had to find shipping alternatives.
Co-founder Nathalie Morin said it was easy to find those alternatives, but they’re more expensive, so they had to raise the prices of their shipping.
She said she thinks the higher price could prevent people from buying their chocolate.
“But to be honest, we’re not letting this stop us from shipping our beautiful products to many other customers,” she said.
“We are hoping our customers are going to be very understanding.”
Morin said they’ve been trying to encourage people to buy local or choose local delivery.
The holiday season is their busiest time of year. She said their sales are up overall this year despite the higher cost of shipping, and she’s optimistic for the rest of the season, too.
However, when the strike first started, their online store was still showing Canada Post shipping rates, and the company had to pay the difference to customers. That cost them thousands of dollars, she said.
Morin adds that many local businesses are resilient and adaptable after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Canada Post workers went on strike Nov. 15. Most recently, talks were put on hold as bargaining grounded to a halt.
