John Hogan has won the Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal leadership race and is set to become the province’s next premier.
He takes over from Andrew Furey, who announced in February that he would be stepping down.
Hogan, a lawyer and longtime public servant, first entered provincial politics in 2021 and quickly became a key figure in government, serving as Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General.
He represents the District of Windsor Lake in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. Before that, he ran his own law firm.
Hogan won 77.48 per cent of the vote, beating John Abbott.
Abbott is also a Liberal Party member and has held various important government positions. He ran for the Liberal leadership in 2020 but lost to Furey.
“I couldn’t be happier where we are as a party and where we are as a province,” Hogan said in his victory speech.
His remarks were publicly shared by his party and campaign team, reinforcing his commitment to leadership.
Following his win, Hogan received congratulations from newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“There’s a lot of work ahead for us both, together, to build one strong Canadian economy — for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, and for Canadians from coast to coast to coast, ” Carney said in a social media post.
