Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit Rome from May 16 to 19 to attend the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV.
The Mass, a significant tradition in the Catholic Church, will take place on May 18 at St. Peter’s Square, marking the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s leadership.
While in Rome, Carney will also meet with international leaders to discuss trade, commerce, and cultural ties.
His visit comes as Canada seeks to strengthen global partnerships.
In a statement following Pope Leo XIV’s election, Carney congratulated him, calling it a “moment of renewal, hope, and unity” for Catholics worldwide.
“At a time of profound global challenges, may his pontificate be marked by wisdom, discernment, and a deep commitment to the common good,” Carney said in the statement.
