Anticipation is growing for a historic moment on the Pictou waterfront!
In just a matter of days Ship Hector will do a traditional launch into the harbour with thousands expected to watch the rare sight.
The replica 18-century vessel has been under reconstruction work for five years and according to the Ship Hector Society there is still a ways to go before it will be fully operational.
Once complete however, the ship will offer sail training and tours, with 60 people at a time.
History
The history of Ship Hector dates back to 1773.
It arrived in Pictou Harbour with 171 Scottish immigrants on board.
A replica was built in the 1990’s and was launched in 2000 to a large audience of about 10,000.
Fast forward 25 years later, the ship was in rough shape with a lot of rot.

The society says the weight of the boat and funding are two key reasons why they are forging ahead with the launch.
They also say they still need funding an encourage donations.
Ship Hector will launch Saturday, July 12.
