The Cape Breton Regional Municipality is asking residents to voluntarily conserve water as ongoing dry conditions and lower-than-normal rainfall put pressure on supplies.
Officials say limited precipitation in recent weeks has slowed the natural replenishment of both surface and groundwater, and no significant rain is expected in the near future.
The request applies to both municipal water utility customers and private well owners. For those on municipal supply, cutting back reduces overall demand and may help avoid mandatory restrictions. Well owners are encouraged to conserve now to prevent their wells from running dry.
Recommended steps include taking shorter showers, turning off taps when brushing teeth or washing dishes, only running washing machines and dishwashers when full, and limiting outdoor water use such as lawn watering, vehicle washing, and filling pools.
CBRM says cooperation now will help protect and preserve the community’s water resources through the current dry period.
