A new Costco is possibly in the works for Middle Sackville, but nothing has been confirmed.
Mayor Andy Fillmore tells Acadia News that there is interest in building what would be the third location in the province, on Margeson Drive, as part of the city’s regional plan for growth.
“We keep on packing people into the downtown and into Downtown Dartmouth. We need to be spreading out a little bit and focusing concentrated development where there are big intersections,” says Fillmore.
He says the two Coscto’s we already have are so incredibly busy, another location will go a long way to make a more “pleasant experience”.
Since word got out, there has been a lot of excited buzz on social media.
Fillmore says perhaps that chatter will expedite things, with no word yet on a timeline.
“If this helps that project move along a little quicker and show the folks who want to build it that there is demand and people are happy about it- so be it,” adds Fillmore.
The development, if it goes ahead, would include thousands of new homes.
“Everyone knows we need more homes, where we have a serious housing shortage in HRM. So, that whole development node would have places for people to work, places for people to shop,” says Fillmore. “There’d be a new community centre, there’d be a new Sobey’s.”
He says it means people can live near where they work, taking away some congestion downtown.
“It would be great for the community.”
