Family Feud Canada. You know, you know the theme song, right? You know, it goes like this. You can sing along. That’s right. Go. Duh-dun-dun! Duh-dun-dun! You know the one where all the people are standing up and down. They’re like, good answer, good answer, good answer.
Family Feud Canada is looking for families to be in season number 8 of Family Feud Canada. And they are looking for you to be part of that season. Maybe. Possibly. I kind of want to be part of it myself.
I’ve got Donia on the line with me right now. Donia is the supervising casting producer. Donia located in Toronto, Ontario. It’s 7:37 there.
Good morning, Donia.
Good morning, Nova Scotia.
Hey, listen. Donia, I know this is wicked early in the morning for you. And I appreciate you getting up and talking to me on the phone. To tell me about Family Feud Canada. So let’s start with that, okay?
Family Feud Canada looking for people. What does that mean?
Yeah, Family Feud Canada is back. I can’t believe season 8 is underway. We’re looking for Canadians far and wide. But really just everyday families that are looking to bring fun, relatable stories to the show. And right now, virtual auditions are happening as we speak. Like at 737 in the morning? This is wicked early for some people. Especially on the West Coast. Yeah, listen. We like to accommodate families in every time zone. So we don’t discriminate over here. We’ll get up early at the crack of dawn to make it happen.
So I’ve been a fan of Family Feud for years, right? As I believe we all have been. Everybody’s seen an episode of Family Feud at one time or another. Does it have to be the family that lives in your house?
That’s a great question. No. Families can come from different provinces. But you don’t all have to necessarily be under one roof. The great thing about our show is it actually brings family closer together. Sometimes we’ve had family members who haven’t seen each other in a decade. And then they kind of gather on the stage and have a big family reunion. Whether it’s virtual auditions or traveling to the studio, the family members that you select don’t necessarily have to be the ones in your household. It can be blended, extended families that live anywhere in Canada. That sounds fantastic.
I didn’t even know that was an option. Because I can tell you this. I personally have family in Prince Edward Island. And then family in Ontario, in two different cities in Ontario. In Ottawa and Toronto. Can I apply? I love this idea of bringing family together. If somebody has family in BC, can they come together for the show? And where is the show recorded?
You got it. The show is recorded in downtown Toronto. No matter where you live in Canada, even if it’s a remote town, we will get you to Toronto by any means. The show does cover the cost of flight and accommodation. We’ll fly you to Toronto, put you in a hotel. We don’t want families to take on the financial burden of flying since flights are expensive. And we also want to make sure that the show is accessible to Canadians far and wide. So the show is taking care of the travel, the accommodations, and giving you the opportunity to win the show? Yeah, you got it. The opportunity to win $30,000. Fun fact, you actually don’t get taxed on the prize money here in Canada. Can’t say the same about our U.S. counterparts. But yeah, $30,000 is up for grabs. And families will not only walk away with that potentially, but meeting Jerry Dee and also an experience of a lifetime.
Now you’ve got five people on your team. Do you need five or do you need like six because you need a spare just in case? How does it work?
You do need five team members on the stage, but we do recommend applying with a sixth alternate member. Sometimes, you know, life happens and things change with family members’ availabilities. And that’s okay. So I think it’s good having a backup just in case. You never know. Okay, so how do people find out? Because now I want to do it too. I’m going to call my cousins this afternoon and be like, listen, let’s do Family Feud Canada.
Okay, I’ve got another one. I’ve got another question because I’m asking personally. I’ve got a cousin that lives in London, England. Are you taking care of that too or is it only Canadian residences?
So we’re looking at Canadians living in Canada at the moment. We will only five families living within Canada. However, if that Canadian family member of yours happens to be in town, then there is a world where we can potentially make that work.
Okay, because I’m thinking about this as I have Canadians that live abroad. I’m sure there’s somebody else that has Canadians that live abroad and that would be an interesting question. Totally.
Okay, so just to remind people, we’re talking Family Feud Canada. Supervising casting producer Danya is on the phone with me right now from Toronto. It’s 8.42 in Toronto or it’s 7.42 in Toronto, so it’s wicked early. I just got an email. You heard that. So here’s the next question. I’ve lined up my family. I’ve got them all to say they want to get in on it. They know that they can fly to and from Toronto when the show is being shot. It’s at no cost to them other than food. But the show Family Feud Canada is taking care of flights, accommodations, and you can walk around.
Oh Scottie, yeah, I’ve got to jump in. We’ll feed them too.
What? You didn’t say food?
We got a great spread in studio and families traveling from outside of Ontario also have access to a per diem. So we actually give them money to spend on food in Toronto as well. Okay, alright, then they’re going to hook you up with some food. And how long does it take for the show to be done? How long is your holiday in Toronto? How long does it take? So typically it takes one to two days. It really just depends when the family plays. And also if they win, if you keep winning, you’re going to be in studio a bit longer. But typically families could be in and out of studio within a day or two. Okay, alright, I’m putting this out to my people. I don’t know if anybody else wants to do that too, but yeah, sure, go ahead.
However, when my family, and I’m talking like my mom’s side of the family. I’m just telling you right now, the MacDonald family from all over Canada, from Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island are going to win. We’re going to win because I’m going to apply this afternoon. How do people apply? How do I go ahead and apply?
To apply, visit cbc.ca slash family feud auditions. There you’ll just fill out a short application. You’re going to upload a family photo, submit a short 30 second video. Giving us the rundown about your family. Not all family members have to be in that video, it could just be the team captain. Answer a few short question answers. One of our team members will be in touch to set up that virtual audition. Where your family introduces themselves. Again, we’ll get to learn all the fun things about you. And then play a mock game as well on the call. Oh really? So is this like a Zoom call? Or is this like a team meeting? It is, yeah. It’s a Zoom call? Alright. Yeah. And if it happens to be a family like mine where we’re all over the place, multiple Zoom meetings or just one where everybody calls in? Yeah, the great thing about having auditions virtually is that family members can join in remotely no matter where in Canada they are. So again, not everybody has to join in from that one Zoom window. We can have multiple people dial in from different parts of the country. I love it. I love it. That’s it. I’m in. I’m going to talk to my people this afternoon and I’m going to apply today.
Donia, I appreciate you taking the time this morning to chat for a little while about Family Feud Canada. Thank you so much.
You’re welcome. Can I give folks a few tips? Yeah, sure, sure. Oh, 100%. Okay, so this is the biggest thing that we’re looking for. Really just families who aren’t afraid to be themselves. Having fun on that audition call is the most important tip that I have. But other than that, I encourage folks to come on that call prepared, sharing their funniest, silliest family stories, whether it’s embarrassing moments at the dinner table or things that just kind of get people laughing whenever they get together. Those are the stories that we want to hear because at the end of the day, we’re looking for relatable families. So I just encourage families to show up on that audition, wear bright colours, anything you can do to stand out. You can bring a prop that maybe speaks to your family and reflects your personality. But again, the most important thing is to have fun and do not treat that call like a job interview because it’s the furthest thing from it.
Donia, I appreciate that. I did get a text as we’re talking about this and I want to ask you this question through the text. What if you have a spouse, seven children, and they all have partners, can two teams of the same family members be cast and can they go against each other? Can you have a family within a family, family feud?
Oh, that’s a great question. I’ll start off by saying both families can apply. I do know off the top of my head that they likely won’t be able to face each other not in a regular season. If we do have some sort of special themed week, there may be a world where we can make that happen. But that’s a good one. I’ll pitch that. We’ll see. You never know. That was sent in by Tina Murphy, by the way. I just want to give Tina her credit. Again, a spouse, seven children, they all have partners. So you’ve got a family within a family within the family feud. Like the Murphy family versus the Murphy family. Has that ever been done on Family Feud before?
That would be fun. We’ve never had a family all related to each other play against each other. Like mom against the dad. Yeah, I know. That would be fun. I think maybe one day. Everybody’s saying on one side, good answer, good answer, good answer. The other side being like, you’re dumb! That’s dumb! Oh, and then last thing I want to mention. We actually had the Murray family from Halifax, Nova Scotia in Season 5. Currently, they are the family from Nova Scotia that hold their record for most prize money from Nova Scotia. So they won $20,000. We had families win $30,000, but they were from different parts of the country. All that to say is I’m looking for a family in Nova Scotia to break that record. I want a family to win $30,000 this year. What do you think? I think that’s a great idea.
I’m telling you, the MacDonald family, because my mother’s a MacDonald. The MacDonald family from Ontario, Nova Scotia and PEI. We’re going to win $50,000! I’m just putting it out there right now because we’re going to apply this afternoon. They don’t even know yet. Alright, well find a way to kind of squeeze in an extra $20,000. No promises though.
No problem! No problem! We’re going to win that many times. And then the Tournament of Champions. And then the Champions of Champions.
That’s all there is to it. You never know. Never a dull moment. That could happen. All I can say is tune in and find out. But in the meantime, bet on yourselves. Take a chance. Have fun. And submit that application for your family. Again, you can do that at cbc.ca slash Family Feud Auditions. Family Feud Auditions. You got it! Thank you, Donia. I appreciate the time this morning. Have yourself a great day. Thank you so much. Have a good one. That is Donya from Toronto this morning where it’s still early. And CBC’s Family Feud Canada. Season 7 coming up on TV and they’re casting for Season 8 right now.
