The future of North America’s oldest continuing weekly newspaper remains up in the air.
Officials with the SaltWire Network suspended production of all their weekly publications in the province and Newfoundland in March; that included The Casket in Antigonish.
Company reps have announced 109 temporary layoffs will be permanent because of the impact COVID-19 has had on their advertising revenues; 61 of those cuts are in our province.
In an email, SaltWire’s chief operating officer and executive vice-president tells The Hawk The Casket remains on temporary hiatus as they determine where and when it’s viable to restart publications that are dependent on local business conditions.
Ian Scott says the Antigonish publication has one person on temporary layoff and one at work.
