Officials with the Town of Mulgrave have held the line on tax rates.
Councillors passed their 2020-21 budget at a special meeting Monday night.
The town’s rates remain $1.23/$100 of assessment for residential customers, and $4.52/$100 of assessment for commercial customers.
Councillors approved a tax rate increase as part of their 2019-20 budget.
After Monday’s meeting, Ralph Hadley, the mayor of Mulgrave, told The Hawk they couldn’t raise rates for a second year in a row.
“We couldn’t increase again this year,” he said. “It wouldn’t be right on the taxpayers to go two years.”
Hadley said they balanced their $1.7 million budget without using reserve funds.
He said it was a challenge to do so while also avoiding a rate hike.
“We’re paying enough,” he said. “It was hard scrapings, but we still made it.”
Hadley said COVID-19 has had an impact on the town’s finances.
He said it increased their expenditures, but also created cost savings as a result of some reduced services.
