The Municipality of the District of Guysborough’s warden says their four-day work weeks are going well.
Municipal employees started a four-day rotation in June. Workers are divided into two teams; one works Monday-to-Thursday and the other Tuesday-to-Friday.
Councillors passed first reading of their expanded hours and four-day week policy at July’s regular council meeting Wednesday.
Afterward, Pitts said COVID-19 brought about the change, but it was something they were considering before the pandemic.
“I believe we’re the first municipal until in the province, if not the whole country, to attempt this,” he said. “We’re going to do it, and we’re going to pull it off, and it’s going to be successful.”
Pitts said all employees were given the option to remain on a five-day schedule and none accepted.
He said it’s been a more efficient model so far.
“This way here we’re ending up actually getting about two hours extra work, productive work, per day, out of our public works department.”
He said they’ll decide if they’ll continue with four-day weeks permanently in January.
