All varsity sports practices and training at St. Francis Xavier University have been suspended.
Leo MacPherson, StFX Athletics Director, says it is a sanction after officials found members from every sports team attended a Highland Drive party last weekend.
A release from Elizabeth Yeo, StFX Vice President, Students, says a guest from outside the Atlantic bubble broke isolation to attend.
MacPherson says students ignored gathering limits, and that is unacceptable.
“Our biggest disappointment is that student-athletes arrived at this function and didn’t recognise that, ‘hey, this already exceeds parameters,’ and leave.”
MacPherson says they won’t tolerate high-risk behaviours.
He says they chose to suspend varsity practices and training for two weeks because it is the amount of time someone must isolate to show they are COVID-19 free, and he wanted student-athletes to reflect on what that meant.
MacPherson says university officials are investigating, and those involved will face the university’s disciplinary process.
The suspension is set to end on the Oct. 19, pending the outcome of that investigation.
