The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough has been elected to another four-year term.
Vernon Pitts, the councillor for District 6, was re-elected in the Oct. 17 municipal elections, defeating challenger Susan Cashin with 57 per cent of the vote.
He and Janet Peitzsche, who defeated Lynette Newell for the District 5 seat with 81 per cent of the vote, were nominated for warden during October’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, the first since the elections; Pitts won the secret ballot vote among councillors.
After, Pitts told The Hawk he’s happy to be part of the team.
“I’m quite ecstatic to be the leader of the team again, the spokesman for the municipality,” he said. “I commend my fellow councillors for exercising their confidence in me.”
All councillors, including newcomers Paul Long and Mary Germaine Desmond, took the oath of office during the meeting.
Pitt said he’s impressed by the group.
“Perhaps we’re going to have some new ideas,” he said. “Basically, the first couple months is going to a learning curve for the two new councillors, (but) from what I know of them, they’re going to be quick studies- they’re firmly engaged with their communities.”
Pitts has served as the municipality’s warden since 2013.
Peitzsche defeated Long in the subsequent deputy warden vote that went to a second ballot; the first vote ended in a tie, so councillors voted again, and elected Peitzsche.
