The warden of Antigonish Co. is back on the job.
Owen McCarron, who had no challengers in District 6 (St. Andrews) in October’s municipal elections, was the only candidate nominated for warden at a special council meeting and swearing in ceremony Monday night; he was acclaimed.
After the meeting, McCarron said he’s excited to get started with the new team.
“I think the big thing is for council to sit down and look at our strategic priorities- new councillors around the table, we need to hear from them what they’ve heard on the campaign trail,” he said. “(Then we can) set our priorities for the county.”
There are two new faces- Shawn Brophy beat incumbent Vaughan Chisholm in District 4 (Fringe Area West) and Harris McNamara defeated incumbent Neil Corbett and fellow challenger Carol MacEachern in District 9 (Linwood/Havre Boucher/Aulds Cove) in October’s elections.
McCarron said they’ll have time to get adjusted to their new roles.
“I encourage people to ask lots of questions- staff will certainly be supporting them, council will be supporting them as well,” he said. “(It’s) just finding out from those councillors what some of the concerns were that they’ve heard, and some of the initiatives that they’d like to see happen.”
McCarron has been warden since 2017.
Hughie Stewart returns as deputy warden; he was also the only nominee for that position.
