Two of the international COVID-19 variants have been found in our province.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Doctor Robert Strang says both cases were from international travel. One was the UK variant and the other was the South African variant.
Doctor Strang says there is no evidence of community spread.
“Beyond the household of the second case, there was no spread of COVID-19 virus because any close contacts all tested negative,” he says. “From neither of the cases was there spread of the COVID virus in general, and so, if there hasn’t been spread of the COVID virus in general, we know there hasn’t been spread of any variant strain.”
Doctor Strang says the cases were reported in December but have just been identified as variants.
Four new cases Friday: one travel related in Central Zone, two travel related in Western Zone, one a close contact of a previously reported case in Northern Zone.
22 active infections remain in the province.
