It was one year ago Tuesday officials with the Town of Antigonish sent employees home as COVID-19 ramped up.
Councillors marked the anniversary of the global pandemic’s local impact at March’s regular town council meeting Monday night.
After, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, said it took a massive effort to run the town remotely.
“Everybody took it in stride, put their heads down, and did what they knew had to be done,” she said. “The logistics of operating a town from home was no easy feat- we’re very fortunate to have the staff that we do, and we got through the year very well.”
Boucher said it was a huge task with a lot of moving parts.
She said they managed to pull it off.
“It’s very overwhelming to think of taking everything that’s here, and people doing the work from home,” she said. “From doing payroll, to making sure that the utility bills go out, to making sure that people are paid (and) our bills are paid (to) making sure the correspondence was there- communication had to be phenomenal through the whole thing.”
Boucher said it’s not the time to say ‘mission accomplished’.”
She said we’re anxious to get to the end, but we need keep going in the fight against COVID-19.
