Pictou Provincial Court
A man from Pictou Co. who pleaded not guilty in relation to a fatal crash that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter from Antigonish is scheduled to return to court Tuesday.
RCMP say a transport truck veered into the oncoming lane of Hwy. 104 in Barney’s River Station and hit a Pontiac G6 in Oct. 2019; Helen Sampson, 74, and Eva Sampson, 51, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Devon Michael Dewtie, 21, of Trenton faces two counts of criminal negligence causing death; he entered not guilty pleas in August.
His three-day trial is set to get underway in Pictou Provincial Court.
Police say a mattress flew off the roof of his car and ended up on the road, which caused the driver of the transport truck to lose control and hit the victims’ vehicle.
Dewtie, who was arrested without incident at a home in Greenwood the day after the crash, was released on conditions following his first appearance in the case shortly after the crash.
