February is Black History Month.
While the pandemic has limited gatherings, there are still learning opportunities through the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre, who have shared a three part series “The Journey Back to Birchtown”, celebrating music and culture.
Darlene Cooper is the president of the Black Loyalist Heritage Society. She was elected president in September and is sharing her thoughts on Black History Month.
“Blacks have always celebrated their culture, and it’s not just a month,” says Cooper. “It just gives us an opportunity to reflect on history, where we are present day and hopefully where we’re going in the future.”
She shared a message for all Nova Scotians.
“Reflect on the history of the black community, not only in 1783, but in this time period of 2022,” says Cooper. “We’ve come a long way, we all have a long way to go and there is a future for all of us in this community, this province and this country.”
There are also learning resources through the African Nova Scotia Affairs and African Nova Scotia Music Association websites.
