Another day, another scam to be aware of.
This time, it’s a warning coming from the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 in Port Hawkesbury.
Personally, if I get a call soliciting donations, I’m not engaging in that just to be safe. However, it is important to ensure that people are aware of potential calls such as this.
First, if it doesn’t seem to be on the up and up – hang up. Don’t worry about being rude, protect yourself.
Second, if you want to report it, here are some steps you can take:
- Contact your local police, non emergency line.
For anonymous tips, you can also use Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers: 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or on their website. - Report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
Call them toll-free: 1-888-495-8501
They also have an online Fraud Reporting System.
Tips When Reporting
• Document everything: details of the call like date, time, number, what was said, how they asked for money, what payment method they demanded.
• Don’t send money until you verify: If they claim to be from a group, call the group back using a phone number YOU find (not the one the caller gives you) to confirm.
• Warn Others: Let friends or family know about the scam, especially if the group is local or community-based like in this instance with the Legion.
